The national park is located on the south coast of the island of Cuba, east of the city of Santiago de Cuba, between the coast of the Caribbean Sea and the Sierra Maestra Mountains. Established in 1987, it occupies an area of 84,887 hectares, which is characterized by a great variety of landscapes and ecosystems (beaches, lagoons, valleys, rocky cliffs and mountains). In the park, grow more than 2000 species of flowering plants, 496 species of ferns and 277 species of bryophytes, including about 300 endemic species. The fauna includes 140 species of arachnids, 120 Lepidoptera species, 38 species of land snails, 94 fish species, 17 amphibian species, 42 reptile species, 14 bat species and 153 bird species (about half of all fauna - endemic species of Cuba).
In 1987, the Baconao National Park was declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve of world importance. In its territory, the remains of settlements of Indian tribes inhabiting the territory back in the pre-Columbian era, the colonial period left behind the ruins of about 70 French coffee plantations, the American period includes abandoned mines for the extraction of iron and manganese ore. Among the most famous tourist attractions of the park is the Prehistoric Valley. On 11 hectares of the park, among the lush vegetation, 200 sculptures of dinosaurs, diplods, triceratops and other prehistoric animals in full size have been installed. Here you can see sculptural compositions (also life-sized) depicting scenes of hunting and fishing for primitive people.
In the park, there is a large rock of volcanic origin La Gran Piedra. The huge monolith has a weight of about 63,000 tons, its length is 51 meters, width is 30 meters, height is 25 meters (in the Guinness Book of Records, La Gran Piedra is registered as the third largest monolith in the world). The stone itself is located at an altitude of 1234 meters above sea level, on its top is a ladder of 459 steps, from the top offers a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding area, and on a very dark night, you can even see the lights of Jamaica.
History lovers can visit the Granjita Siboney farm, in which Fidel Castro and other revolutionaries slept before the attack on the Moncada barracks on July 26, 1953.
Visitors to the Baconao Park can also visit the Land Transport Museum, the Cactus Garden of Jardín de Cactus, the Aquarium and the Baconao Dolphinarium, take a stroll along the shore of the Baconao Lagoon and watch the birds that nest here.
