The truth is that
Cayo Coco, with an area of
370 km2, is the fourth largest plot of land of Cuba, and also one of the most beautiful locations in the Caribbean. This unbeatable time of the Cuban geography has had illustrious admirers ranging from
Jacques de Sores, the French corsair, or
Diego Velázquez, to the Nobel Prize for Literature
Ernest Hemingway, who enjoyed their locations for fishing. It is the second largest tourist destination country beach, just behind the always impressive
Varadero.
Cayo Coco is connected to the province of
Ciego de Avila by a
stone-road - sort stacked from the seabottom to resemble a dique-, which stretches for
27 km stones. Located in the sprawling
Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago, also known by the name of
Jardines del Rey (King´s Gardens), the cay is part of an impressive ecosystem, declared a wildlife reserve and the Cuban flora. For this reason, the government has developed an integrated ecological tourism in the area.
This makes it possible on the northern coast all the tourist infrastructure is concentrated, while the south remains in its pristine state, as a nature reserve. In this regard highlights the
Natural Park El Bagá, an excellent site for
bird watching, for its
130 species reported. The coastal landscape is simply idyllic. The beaches of Cayo Coco are famous for their fine sand dunes, shades of blue in the distance and abundant coconut trees, especially Flamenco Beach and Las Coloradas, categorized among the most beautiful in Cuba.
In addition, the underwater landscape of Cayo Coco, for its diversity of species and coral formations, Punta Frances and the Guanahacabibes Peninsula.
Coco Diving and Blue Diving Centers coordinate activities in more than twenty sites along the giant barrier reef
10 km. The best areas are
La Jaula, the deepest in the area with
30 m, and
Los Tiburones, just 16 m, but with the additional attraction of being an area frequented by several species of reef sharks.
Moreover, from the
comfortable hotel facilities in Cayo Coco you can walks along the coast, visits to the colony of flamingos or have a tours around the of small keys in the area, frequented by Hemingway in his fishing trips.
